A theme in The Emperor of Nihon-Ja is loyalty. The Emperor, loyal to his people, didn't want any more bloodshed happening, so he backed down. His troops were also very loyal to him because they were willing to risk their lives for him. A positive element would be that this book is intense, like when the fighting started.
