Porcupine by Meg Tilly

After her father died, 12-year-old Jacqueline (or Jack) Cooper could only watch as her mother crumbles under so much depression. Then suddenly she leaves Jack and her younger siblings, Simon and Tessa, across the country in their great-grandmother's run-down farm. Jack puts herself in the position of responsibility to care for the family and learns the true meaning of being together. A story with depth and great characters, this book is recommended to kids 10-14.
